Seneca Fashion Arts students Stephanie Ngai and Qianwen Liang have moved one step closer to seeing their designs come to life.

The pair beat out hundreds of applicants from across Ontario to advance to the finals of the 2012 Basch It Up! Competition.

In March, their women’s wear outfits will be constructed and presented at the Eleventh Floor Apparel’s Basch Fashion show where a panel of industry judges will decide on the winner. In this final stage of the competition, Stephanie and Qianwen will be competing against eight other students from George Brown, Ryerson, Fanshawe and the Academy of Design.

The winner will receive a six-month paid internship at Eleventh Floor Apparel, a $1,000 clothing allowance from Basch and a $700 clothing gift card from Eleven Boutique.

In IAF, you’ll gain a unique accounting education based on the requirements and the competencies set out by the bodies that govern the CA, CGA, and CMA designations, thus enabling you to be job-ready in the Canadian and global business environment. You will possess depth and breadth of knowledge in the areas of accounting, business, finance and technology, as well as effective critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, interpersonal and team skills. Program Description
Seneca’s School of Information and Communications Technology is a recognized leader in developing and delivering programs that are relevant to the fast-paced Information Technology industry’s constantly evolving requirements. Project management methodologies and techniques have evolved from the traditional waterfall methodology through incremental and iterative development to agile methodologies. What distinguishes the Project Management – IT graduate certificate is that it gives students grounding in all of these methodologies as they are currently being practiced in the IT industry and an understanding of when each is most appropriate to follow.

Graduates of this one year program (8 months of study plus 4 months optional co-op) will be able to apply project management skills to entry-level positions in a wide range of software development and IT administration projects. This program covers Project Management, Project Leadership, Accounting & Finance, Agile Methodology, Systems Development, Quality Assurance, and Contract Law/Ethics/Professionalism.
There are two intakes each year - September & January.

It was the worst thing that happened to him, and the best thing that happened to him.

That’s how Business Administration - Entrepreneurship and Small Business student Andrew Mizzoni describes his courageous battle against childhood cancer.

Diagnosed at the age of 9, Andrew beat a rare form of the disease that claimed his left eye. Now he is helping other children in their cancer fight through his foundation, which has raised more than $400,000 for pediatric cancer research at SickKids Hospital.

“It [cancer] really changes you,” he says. “Other little children were beside me, and the next day they were gone. That made me grow up fast and I wanted to give back.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary for the Andrew Mizzoni Charity Golf Classic. The 19-year-old originally started the tournament with his dad, while undergoing his chemotherapy. What started out as a family tournament has grown into a marquee fundraising event that is supported by local athletes, celebrities and corporate sponsors. For his fundraising efforts, Andrew has received numerous awards for philanthropy, and was named Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year and was recognized by Today's Parent Magazine as one of the top five individuals in the country who are making a difference in the lives of Canadian children.

Just last year, Andrew added another accomplishment to his distinguished list of accolades. At 18, he received his real estate license, making him one of the youngest agents in Toronto. These days, when he is not in class learning about Entrepreneurship and Small business, Andrew is working as an agent with Homelife Metropark Realty.

He has been on the job for less than a year, but he has already sold and listed multiple homes and condos — many of which are high-end properties. Always the philanthropist, Andrew has even combined his new career with his charity efforts to support SickKids Hospital by dedicating a percentage of his commissions to support cancer research.

“Like my slogan says, ‘Every deal makes a difference,” Andrew says. “My focus will always been on helping others and making a difference.”

With what he is learning at Seneca, Andrew hopes to expand his career by opening and running several business ventures. After he earns his diploma he also has plans to pursue a business degree and eventually an MBA.

“I want to inspire children who are going through what I went through and give them hope,” Andrew says. “With my toughest battle behind me, I know I can succeed in whatever I do.”

As a member of the York Regional Police Marine Unit, David Flood is part of a specialized rescue team that is first to the scene for all water and ice emergencies on Lake Simcoe.

In fact, for seven years, David has been rescuing people and on April 27 he received one of the highest police honours – the Bravery in the Line of Duty Award — for his role in saving the lives of four people.

Business Administration – Human Resources Management students Ursula Carey, Deborah Giblin and Laura Aitken are featured in a new online video created by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to promote post-secondary education.

The students were selected to be profiled after winning the Great Canadian HR – Business Student Case Study Competition earlier this year. The three Senecans, along with their fourth partner Lydia McIntosh, defeated George Brown and Centennial College to win the prestigious event, which was held at the Toronto Board of Trade.

During the course of the competition, the students were tested on their ability to analyze and present a solution to a business case study.

For winning, the team received the $4,000 grand prize and a $1,000 scholarship on behalf of the College. They also won the People’s Choice Award, which is voted on by the conference delegates and earned each member of the team an iPad.

Friday, June 24 was indeed a special day for Joanne McAndrew.

The Law Clerk graduate attended her convocation ceremony, where she received her diploma and was presented with the Governor General’s Academic Medal by Seneca College Board of Governors Chair Bill Hogarth, pictured above with Joanne.

The award is given annually to a student who achieves the highest academic standing in his or her final year of a full-time post-secondary diploma program.

Prior to coming to Seneca, Joanne worked as a successful, senior accountant. Two years ago, she decided it was time for a career change, and a passion for law led her to Seneca’s Law Clerk program.

As a mature student, Joanne achieved straight A's and became a permanent fixture on the President’s Honour List. If her commitment to learning excellence weren’t impressive enough, this future law clerk also led the Seneca curling team to an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Gold Medal.

Governor General’s Academic Medals have been awarded to Canadian students for more than 125 years in recognition of exceptional scholastic accomplishments.

Medals are given to students graduating with the highest average in high school and college or university programs.

Alex Johnston joins Stephanie Grunhut as this year’s co-recipients of the Seneca Cup.

President David Agnew presented the College's most prestigious student award to Alex on June 23 at the Newnham Campus Convocation ceremony.

During his time at Seneca, Alex—a graduate of the Flight Program— has been on the President’s Honour List, and has received countless academic and leadership awards. Included among them is the 2011 W.T. Newnham Award, which is presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in the enhancement of the quality of life at Seneca College.

Graphic Design students pitch crime prevention campaigns

Students from Seneca’s Graphic Design program will be at Toronto Police Headquarters (40 College Street) on June 21 at 9 a.m. to pitch a series of crime prevention campaigns to the Toronto Police Service.

As part of their Design for Social Change class, the students have created posters and other marketing collateral to raise awareness on a number of public safety subjects, including break and enters, sexual assaults and bullying.

Taught by Professor Paul Shecter, Design for Social Change focuses on creating non-commercial graphic design work. Over the years, students have lent their design talents to campaigns raising awareness of elder abuse, the dangers of guns and gangs and domestic violence.

The Recreation and Leisure Services graduate maintained a 3.9 GPA and served as President of the King Campus Recreation Council and Seneca Athletic Association.

During her studies at Seneca, Stephanie also received the Wayne Norrison Leadership Award, the Seneca Athletic Association Award and the outstanding team contribution award for her time on the women’s varsity fastball team.

In order to win the Seneca Cup, a student must show excellence in academic achievement and demonstrate an active commitment to improve the quality of student life at the College. It is presented only when there is an exceptional student who is most deserving of this auspicious award.

Creative Advertising Professor and Program Co-ordinator Anthony Kalamut will be spending his summer as an "Ad Critic" for the National Post advertising feature titled Ad Missions.

The Ad Missions panel generally consists of academic, marketing and advertising agency executives. They will offer their views and opinions on advertising trends, commercials and all things in between.

This past Friday Anthony made his debut along side advertising industry executives Henry Wong, creative director of Toronto-based Tenzing Communications, and Chris Hall, president of Toronto ad agency Huxley Quayle von Bismark. Together, the group offered up their thoughts on the new Oreo cookies "Moving Day" television ad.

Seneca College and the University of Toronto (U of T) announced a unique post-secondary partnership

that shortens the time it takes eligible Seneca students to earn a diploma and a degree at both institutions to four years.

The Student Success Partnership Agreement gives students the opportunity to begin their studies at Seneca and complete them at U of T earning both a Liberal Arts diploma and a university Bachelor of Arts degree in four years. The two institutions signed a formal partnership agreement on Thursday at Kruger Hall, Woodsworth College, St. George Campus.

“Our partnership provides qualified Seneca students with a seamless option for continuing their education in the Honours BA Program in U of T’s Faculty of Arts and Science,” said Seneca President David Agnew. “It speaks to our commitment to our students’ success and ensures ongoing co-ordination and collaboration between our two institutions that will allow us to explore further opportunities for our students.”

Students in the program spend their first two years at Seneca, while taking two or three U of T courses. They complete their studies with a third and fourth year entirely at the university’s St. George campus.

"The small classes, feedback from professors and support from Seneca make the Liberal Arts program an ideal foundation for students who want to go on to successfully pursue a degree at the University of Toronto," said Nicolas Esper, Liberal Arts graduate who is transitioning into a full-time U of T student.

Alternatively, after completing the first two years at Seneca, students have the option of continuing their studies at U of T as partial load or part-time students – allowing for more flexible learning. “We’re delighted to help students reach their goals and achieve success through this innovative partnership,” said U of T Vice-Provost Cheryl Regehr.

In 2008, Seneca’s Liberal Arts program and the Faculty of Arts and Science at U of T established a pilot project that paved the way for this partnership agreement.

The future, in this case, is represented by the digital portfolios of students enrolled in interactive and multimedia college programs in the Greater Toronto Area. They will be the web designers, game developers and new tech gadget users of tomorrow.

For now, their portfolios were shown in publicly-accessible venues, not school classrooms.

Professor Werner Zimmermann has been shortlisted for the 2011 CBA Libris Awards.

Werner has been writing and illustrating children's literature since 1986. His books have been sold worldwide, and he has twice been nominated for a Governor General Award for Illustration in Children's Literature.

Monika Matel-Sousa from the City of Toronto's Elections and Registry Services presented Barry Naymark, Manager of Student Recruitment and Pathways, with an award from the City of Toronto for Seneca's contribution to promoting the 2010 municipal election. The College was recognized for its strong commitment to engaging potential voters in the electoral process and broadening the knowledge of democracy among young citizens.

Last fall, the College partnered with the city in various outreach initiatives as part of the their "Vote" campaign. Seneca also participated in the "Apathy is Boring" initiative to engage and mobilize young voters, through consultations and promotions.
Apathy is Boring is a national, non-partisan project that aims to use art and technology to educate Canadian youth about democracy.

Day three of the conference has come to an end and we are all exhausted! This conference has been unbelievable, unlike anything I have ever attended before! Here's an update on what I've done this week so far:
-Rode a camel for the first time in my life

-Met His Highness Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan (Minister of Higher Education and Technology in the UAE)

-Attended two fantastic sessions on Tuesday with student presenters

-Attended two leadership workshops on Wednesday, Government and Sustainability. For the Sustainability workshop the presenter was Yolanda Kakabadse, the President of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). She spoke passionately about young people being the voice of the future, to help fix what her generation was largely responsible for environmentally. It was amazing to hear views on how to become a more sustainable generation from students living in such diverse regions of the world...."

Latest Firefox browser includes innovative features developed by Seneca College

Toronto, March 22, 2011 – Firefox 4, which is launching today, features groundbreaking technology developed by Seneca students, graduates and faculty.

“Seneca has been involved in creating cutting-edge features and building on existing technology to improve functionality in the new Firefox 4 browser,” said Seneca School of Computer Studies Professor Dave Humphrey.

As a result of Seneca’s on-going partnership with Mozilla Corporation, the College’s School of Computer Studies played an integral role in the creation of two key features in Firefox 4:

Audio API: The new browser allows programmers to manipulate and create audio that can be synced with the rest of the webpage in ways that were previously not possible on the web. This functionality could be used, for example, to improve accessibility of online content for people with disabilities.
WebGL: This technology allows web pages to use the computer’s 3D graphics capabilities. Seneca’s School of Computer Studies has been working with Mozilla to advance this feature. Firefox 4 will ensure that such activities as viewing 3D artefacts from museums, 3D gaming and animation and rich data visualization – all without the need for a plug-in.

“We are proud to have our students, graduates and faculty working on groundbreaking technology with an industry leader like Mozilla,” said Seneca College President David Agnew. “With this project, our students and graduates have made a significant contribution to one of the world’s leading web browsers.” For more information click here.

Seneca Professor’s film accepted into Hot Docs

A documentary film written, directed and produced by Journalism-Broadcast Professor Igal Hecht has been accepted into Hot Docs — one of the world's biggest and most prestigious documentary film festivals.

The Hilltops is an insider’s look into the lives of those who live on the Hilltops of The West Bank. The documentary is part of the festival's Canadian Spectrum program and will be screened on May 1 at 4:30 p.m. at the ROM and on May 3 at 9:30 p.m. at the Cumberland 2 theater. Ticket Information

Professor Hecht is a graduate of the School of Communication Arts, where he has also been teaching for the past seven years. In 1999, he created Chutzpa Productions Inc., and has been making award-winning films ever since. To date, he has produced, filmed, edited and directed more than 40 documentaries and television shows for various channels. In fact, The Hilltops has already been sold to CBC Documentary and will air later this year.

Helping Professor Hecht on his latest project were Journalism-Broadcast graduates Diana Golts and Carlos Guevara.

Hot Docs runs from April 28 to May 8. Over the course of 11 days, more than 199 documentaries from 43 countries will appear on 16 different screens across Toronto.

Seneca website can now be translated to other languages

Developed by Google, the feature allows the user to select a language and instantly see the majority of the site in their language of choosing. Seneca students create feature garden for Canada Blooms

Twelve students from Seneca’s Environmental Landscape Management program have spent the last four days building a feature garden that is now on display at Canada Blooms. The student’s garden was named a finalist for the Evergreen Brickworks Society, Environment, Education and Design award.

Canada Blooms is the largest garden show in Canada, attracting more than 100,000 people to The Direct Energy Centre.

The event wraps up on March 20.

Seneca Fashion student set to compete in international design contest

Esperanza Hurtado, a third-year Fashion Arts student, is traveling to China on March 16 to compete in the 19th Hempel International Young Fashion Designers Contest.

The prestigious contest, founded in 1993, receives applicants from more than 40 countries. Only a select few designers are chosen to compete and show off their creative talent.

Three of Esperanza’s designs were accepted into the competition and will be showcased at the opening of China’s Fashion Week, including the avant-garde blue dress seen in this photo.

Accompanying Esperanza to China will be Professor Zita Harper, who encouraged the young fashion designer to enter the contest.

Seneca students put hospitality skills to work in South Africa

Seneca Professor Debbie Brannan and nine students from the Tourism and Travel and Hospitality Management diploma programs are currently in South Africa as part of the School of Tourism’s 4th Annual South Africa Work Placement Program. The Seneca students are completing an eight-week placement at the Johannesburg Corporate Inn and Conference Centre and at a game reserve and lodge in the KwaZulu Natal province of South Africa. They will be returning to Seneca in mid April.

Program Description

Over the four semesters of the program, your studies will focus on the design, implementation and management of digital graphics, animation, video and audio for interactive multimedia applications, including applications for the Internet.

You’ll be especially well suited for the DMA program if you enjoy all aspects of visual art creation and are both technical and visually talented.

You’ll learn to plan, develop, and design effective visual and audio communication materials for digital delivery on multiple operating systems.

You’ll also apply your creative and artistic skills toward practical purposes such as content creation for the web, social media, marketing and advertising campaigns, new media, television graphics, and special effects and animation for the film, TV and advertising industries. In your second year, you’ll benefit from experience with digital compositing, High-Definition and editing, using advanced technology and high-end equipment.
